Visual Artist Iman Essiet will be curating A Cultural Event to kick off the 2020 Census Check Black Campaign. This event is geared toward educating the Black community on the importance of not only filling out the Census, but most importantly the significance of checking Black.
Join us online on Monday, March 16, as visual, and performing art will be used as a tool to educate and bring together our culture and community on this pressing issue.
As we join in public health messaging about the Coronavirus the March 16th Check Black Census Kick-Off is moving online. We won’t be at Bed-Stuy Restoration but streaming the art show live at checkblackbrooklyn.com. Please spread the word!
Javaka Steptoe, award winning illustrator and author will be the MC.
Confirmed speakers include NYC Deputy Mayor J. Philip Thompson, Dr. Brenda M. Greene of the Center for Black Literature at Medgar Evers College and Lurie Favors, of the Center for Law and Social Justice, Medgar Evers.
Gha’il Rhodes, Grammy Nominated Spoken-Word Performance Artist, will perform and judge the spoken word contest. Visual Artists on display are: Ambria Safford, Amber Rose Venus Garden, Daphne Mia Essiet, Phillip Angel Yeldell, IreMayowa Olopade and the Black Ink Crew.
